ICE shoots dead legal observer Renee Good less than a mile from where George Floyd was killed

At around 9.30 am on 7 January 2026, masked, armed ICE agents turned up on Portland Avenue between East 33rd and East 34th Streets to arrest an immigrant for alleged immigration violations. One of the agents then shot an unarmed legal observer, Renee Nicole Good, a 37 year old wife and mother, as she tried to swerve away from armed ICE agents attempting to unlawfully arrest her as they shouted “Get the fuck out of the car!”

An ICE agent fired at least three shots in her face at point blank range, causing Renee to crash into a stationary vehicle. The ICE agent did not attempt to administer first aid to Renee or allow others to approach her. He simply walked away, got into a Chrysler Town & Country SUV with a Colorado registration plate, and sped from the scene of his crime to cries of “murderer”, “shame”, and “do you have a conscience”, leaving the community stunned.

Despite medics’ attempts to resuscitate her, Renee Nicole Good died less than a mile from where George Floyd was killed, her blood splattered in the snow.

George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer, an act that triggered global protests and left an enduring mark on the city.

ICE later claimed its agents felt threatened. Witnesses disputed that account, describing a community reacting to unidentified armed men attempting to seize someone in broad daylight on a residential street.

In a message directed at President Trump, Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association’s Interim Executive Director David Titus said,

"Irresponsible, reckless rhetoric from political leaders attacking law enforcement has real and dangerous consequences for officers on the street. When officers are vilified, demonised, or used as political props, it fuels hostility, emboldens bad actors, and puts lives directly at risk. MPPOA calls on leaders to stop the inflammatory language and respect the legal and investigative process."

The Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, condemned the Trump administration's narrative of a fatal ICE shooting and said his message to the agency was pure and simple, "Get the fuck out of Minneapolis”.

For many US citizens, ICE agents have come to resemble historical lynch mobs, enforcing racialised state violence through fear, pursuit, and lethal force against Black people and immigrants.

In the years since George Floyd’s murder, South Minneapolis has remained defined by the aftershocks of his killing, including profound mistrust of law enforcement and heightened community vigilance toward armed officers operating in residential spaces.

On 7 January 2026, that history collided once again with the present.
